New Apple Cinema Displays with glossy screens and iSights would be amazing. :)

    No way,
Glossy screen is the worst thing for professionals that depend on color accuracy.
As for the Isight, I think they will keep off from the Cinema displays. They will make an smaller format stand alone IMHO.
I don't think a Special Event will happen for these products.

It may be difficult but one would hope Apple will bring the iPhone (or whatever it ends up being called) to Japan and other countries if it does in fact launch such a phone initially in the US.

    Let's wait and see...

Isn't it possible that the heads up provided up this app (and friends, newspapers, etc) may make people who know they will be drinking later in the evening re-think their mode of transportation? Could be saving a life or two.

Eh not really. If you've been drinking. Don't drive. Not a difficult dilemma to solve. No technology required to solve it.

And if you are planning to go out and get hammered, take a taxi.

as much as others "stole" from apple I bet apple "stole" just as much from other companies. funny how macrumors failed to mention that samsung may be counter suing because apple might have used some samsung tech without asking as well.

oh well life goes on. None of theses multi BILLION dollar companies have any soul, they are just cold, calculating, heartless businesses. And for all the apple fanatics here, yes that INCLUDES apple. :o

USB 3 is coming next year. The only reason Apple has yet to implement it is because Intel hasn't. But that will change in Ivy Bridge.

Agreed. USB is on its last legs, for sure, but it will be around a little while longer before it fades away.

When Intel supports it, Apple will, because it will cost essentially nothing for them to do so, and is backward compatible with previous USB devices.

    But, I don't think we'll be seeing a USB 4.

At these new lower price points that reads pretty UN-educated to me.

Whoopidedoo, a whole $50 off. They HAD to do that because of the lack of actually updating anything worthy on the device. One could argue that it isn't enough of a price cut the way competitors music players are priced.

Anyone with half a brain will avoid these 5th G Part 2 devices like the plague, unless they want to waste money that could be spent 4 months later on a widescreen model.

Should we set up the thread now for the people that rush out and buy this version of the iPod then get burned just after Christmas when the real new iPod comes out? They'll need someplace to vent, and it's usually all over these threads. It would be nice to condense it.

Curious that everyone is clamoring for a thunderbolt-enabled machine, but there isn't a single thunderbolt drive available on the market.

I guess some people just need to feel like they have new stuff even if it's totally pointless.

So Apple have just released MBPs with Sandy Bridge and will now be releasing Ivy Bridge MBPs in 2012? I was really planning on getting an MBP this summer...

Apple still doesn't have upload to a cloud or wireless syncing, and Windows Phone does. 25 GB free sky drive, as well as a beautiful hub where you choose what to access at a glance.

mobile me does this, and I suspect, it will become free soon (or at least parts of it).

I also fear Apple's ridiculous 10.6.7 downgrade was somehow to show the MBA's IGP isn't as bad as it is going to be with SB IGP. Look at OpenGL performance on it, as it dropped 30% from 10.6.6. Now, we have seen Apple screw these things up before, but they also market their new products based upon prior products and list an OS X version tested on the prior gen. If they reverse course with 10.6.8 or 10.7, in the new MBA, then they might show only a 20% loss in IGP performance vs. the prior Nvidia 320m... when in reality, it might be more like a 50% plus loss in performance.

    100% Agree.

Restriction of the freedom perfectly legal information on the internet is always a bad idea. Who knows what they'd ask to be pulled next.

I never understood why we let old men who know nothing about technology or the internet make up laws that govern it.

Merely trying to get rid of the apps wont solve anything and its naive to think it will.

Wow, I'm really impressed by all these people hoping for Liquid Metal. I'm wondering what they think that is, this "Liquid Metal". I bet they think it's something really cool, something that is completely different from anything that humankind has ever used in manufacturing (I mean, I read something like "Black Liquidmetal" in this thread. Wtf?). But truth is, if you held something in your hands made of Liquid Metal you wouldn't even notice the difference between that and anything made of aluminium, steel or any other shiny metal. It may be a very exciting new material for metallurgists or chemists but the consumer will probably just notice that it is a bit more durable and scratch resistant than aluminium (if at all, more likely in direct comparison only). It's the same thing as carbon. When I bought my first bike with carbon forks I was like "Holy crap this is real carbon, I bet this will change my life forever". In fact, it was just the same. Neither did it have a special feel to it. It felt like plastic, not very trustworthy. I liked how it reduced the weight (it was 15% lighter than my old bike all in all), but seriously, it wasn't a big deal after I got used to it. It will be the same with liquid metal. It has a fancy name and everything but for the enormous price of the material it has no use for the consumer whatsoever. It will also have traces of fingerprints on it, it will also get scratchy after some time and so on. Sure, it will take a longer time till it looks used, but nobody will think "This Notebook looks really bad. But hey, if it was made of aluminium it would have looked this way like two months ago. God, I'm so glad it's made of Liquid Metal instead".

It's September. There's three months until Christmas. Apple wont wait that long around this time of year without holding another consumer based event. What will the event be about? Or more importantly, what products will be at this event? Well there will be one product, one major one. The iPhone. It's coming, and my bet is, it's coming before Christmas.

Back in the day I was a huge fan of Logitech mice, if you have one that you really like, then stick with it.

Magic Mouse is fantastic for everyday browsing, it took a few days for me to adjust to the flatter shape of it (I used to like the bigger Logitech ones like the Revolution), but I really do love the Magic Mouse now.

For gaming that requires mousewheel style scrolling and/or using both left and right click at the same time, don't even bother trying. I broke down and bought a Razer mouse for gaming and Photoshop (to go along with my Wacom tablet) before too long.

It's pretty funny that people think that TB is designed to replace USB and therefore competing against it. Saying that is like suggesting that PCIe and DP are competing against USB, because that's what TB is. If your computer doesn't have USB 3.0 and you want it, what do you plug the USB 3.0 controller card into? PCIe of course... how is USB 3.0 competing with the thing it plugs into???

Intel announcing that their future chipsets will support TB and USB 3.0 is great news. It makes a monitor (connected to a computer through a single cable) with a USB 3.0 dock possible and it means all Intel based PCs will ship with TB standard.

TB isn't there to replace USB mice. It's there to provide high speed access to raid arrays, enable universal docking stations with a full array of ports (think USB, eSata, HDMI, audio, etc) connected to a computer through a single cable, and allow laptops to better utilize external graphics cards. The possibilities of extending the PCIe bus outside of the computer are limitless, I can't wait to see what people dream up (especially as speeds ramp up).

USB and TB are largely complimentary. One exception is external hard drives of course and TB is far superior in that aspect (theres a reason raid controllers are plugged into PCIe). Why people are opposed to this is beyond me.

Going public has other dimensions. There's more to business than the consumer and executive/investor ends. Going public allows people to force coporations to act in outside interests, otherwise it's just a private tyranny.

Investors are the kinds of people that can force Apple to resolve the iPod City scandal in workers favors, even if it doesn't pose financial benefits for Apple itself.

The problem is, the investors are usually stinking rich capitalistas anyway, and they'd rather resolve it in Apple's financial favor in order to harvest a couple more pennies from poor, miserable Chinese workers so they can slap it on their already monstrous monthly bank balance.

    So much for morality :/

Im not sure if anyones mentioned it yet, but Rogue Amoeba has posted an update that explicitly explains the API calls and whats actually going on. Its not just Apples icons that are in play here.

None of these icons are shipped in our apps

On the iPhone side, Airfoil Speakers Touch just displays a generic album art image that comes from Airfoil. On the Airfoil side, both the Mac image and the application icon are fetched using public Cocoa APIs.

The call we use to fetch the computer image is [NSImage imageNamed: NSImageNameComputer]. Behind the scenes, the system has a store of machine icons stored away in the /System directory, and matches up your computers model identifier with their artwork to return an icon.

The call we use to get the target applications icon is -[NSWorkspace iconForFile:], which can be used to obtain the icon for any file on the system. Applications such as the Finder would use this call to display the icons of files and applications on the hard drive when browsing its contents.

The code is not specifically designed to send Apples icons

The code is fully generic and simply sends the icon of whatever application the user chooses on the Mac side. Apple applications are popular audio sources for Airfoil, but its entirely possible to send third-party applications like Firefox, Spotify, Last.fm, our own Pulsar, and others, and many users do just that.

Very sad. Someone lost their life over something so trivial. And sad that the guard has to live with knowing he took a life. :(

I've seen this sentiment multiple times in this thread: "Oh it's so sad that the security guard has to live with the knowledge that he took a life."

I don't think that's sad. Personally, I see shooting an armed robber as a thing to celebrate, and boost self-esteem.

Not all life is sacred. If you plan to do violence to innocent people, your's isn't.

My point is that with the new processors and RAM upgrades, the iMac is headed towards more powerful use that could potentially switch over a PC gamer. If you wanted to do some serious gaming on the 24" iMac you could....if not for the poor video card options.

Throw a dog a bone here and at least give us a 512MB option.
I'm not a gaming expert, but from what I've read, 512MB is no faster than 256MB for most current gaming applications, it's the throughput of the GPU that counts. Do any gamers out there want to comment on this?
