Clock speeds will hit 4GHz and keep rising, but not at the rate we have been accustomed to.
I'm not so sure that 4GHz is a given. Doesn't that pesky speed of light put a practical cap on clock frequency? At 4GHz a signal doesn't have time to cross the chip in one clock, so is there any point to such high frequencies?

I'd like to know where this idea that "many have tried" to create viruses and/or malware for OSX comes from. How do you know what people have done or tried?
That comes from ten years of experience. Ten years of pitiful "attacks" on OS X making the news and being quickly followed by "researchers" warning us that we need to buy their AV software. Many have tried, and we have witnessed their many failures.
And this idea that nothing can be done on the Mac until a virus or other malware exploit shows up on a news site is absurd. There are plenty of tools out there, for instance, to point out dangerous web sites that could be a threat to a computer. Most OSX users wouldn't bother to install one if one was offered to them because they believe themselves invulnerable. So why worry about visiting a malware site? Some exploits are potentially cross-platform (adobe flash, for example). Again, I say most OSX users are far too comfortable in a foolish belief that they are not in danger from anything out there.
It's a simple cost benefit analysis. The maximum possible benefit of AV software isn't worth the cost in time and money. As for Flash, it's basically just a method for turning your computer into a television commercial, so you're much better off using Click to Flash (http://clicktoflash.com/) than AV software. At least with that you can avoid the commercials!

Prior to the date being given out for the press event I was fully expecting a new MBP at Photokina.

However now given that it is on a Sunday I see no hope of an update. They wouldn't take down the store on a Sunday whereas the Apeture update will either be a free download or a preview of a 2.0 App therefore needing no major store changes.

PS Is there any precedence of hardware updates on a Sunday?

It's a special event, so I see no reason why Apple cannot take the online store down for a couple hours. The new iMac 24-inch was introduced on a Wednesday rather than a Tuesday. Perhaps Apple will just announce Aperture 2.0 and then new MacBook Pros will be released that Tuesday. Ah, I don't know! Anything can happen with Apple... :)

Oh and as for the update to Aperture 2.0 being free, I highly doubt that will happen. The only way I can see it being free is if it was a minor update, like to version 1.2. Apple wouldn't hold an event for a minor update, though, so 2.0 it is!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, someone reply to my post....
as a person who just purchased the last version of 5gen video ipod, this comes to me as quite a shock really.... i knew this was coming but actaully hoping that it was everything 'rumor' but turns out it's not.....

    anyway, my point is:

WHY DIDN'T STEVE MENTION 30 GIG IPOD, WHILE MOST OF THE ATTENTION SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN FOCUSED ON 8O GIG SOLELY??

although 30 and 80 seem to share most of the new features which are obviously crap(game? who plays that? and search bar? i don't need that crap, too shabby, biatch)
but the thing is BATTERY, gosh

they've plugged about how their new 80 gen has total 20 hrs of battery life and 6.5 hrs of video play, but what about freaking 30???? I SERIOUSLY WANNA KNOW.

i've been to apple store and engadget for live broadcast, but there was no info whatsoever on 30's battery, other than its MAXIMUM battery was 14.... the thing i wanna know is its VIDEO MAXIMUM BATTERY.... is it, again 2 hours? i hope so!! cause i just bought this ol' **** at such higher price and now i feel totally duped. well it was my fault in the first place but i thought it was all RUMOR......................GAWD

Did you fall asleep watching it? He started the dicussion on battery life WITH the 30gb model and explained the improvement there before mentioning the 80gb. True, the 80gb was discussed a tad bit more, but the wrap up on price, songs held, display brightness AND batttery life watching video covered the 30gb.

Edit: I stand corrected on what's on the site. You're right about that. Even in the detailed comparison only music battery life is compared. Of course, you could simply compare that spec and get a ratio you could apply. A 30gb should have 4.55 hours of video capacity.

The new 27-inch model will be my father's first computer (he'll turn 78 this June 1st) I would've bought him one long ago, but he stills works for Union Pacific Railroad (conductor) and is never home. He says however, that he's ready and wants an iMac.

This is going to be a great BDay for him!

    So order it.

I was talking about people who buy a machine and immediately consider returning it.

Speaking of returns, is there a possibility of buying the machine and if they don't auto-upgrade me to the new one, return it and buy a new one?

Yeah... All 13 of you  JK.

Don't get me wrong, I'd probably be a little upset if I were you, but this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise; you are a VERY small percentage of the market.

The amount people who want to use the iMac as a display is a small group?

We're talking consoles, PCs, Macs, phones, tablets, media players, blue-ray players.

I think we'd see a large amount of people like this features, plus it would make the iMac a much more attractive purchase, as it would still be a fine display even after the hardware in it is too old. I know it would most likely make me go for the iMac over the Mac mini(although most likely I'm waiting for the mini before any purchases)

there is no such thing as charity in america, it always comes through commerce.

Well duh. How do you think people and companies earn the money that they donate? If you're suggesting that nobody donates money without some sort of commercial incentive, then you're just flat-out wrong.

It's ironic that a rumor about Apple donating 5% of red iPod sales to charity is answered with a comment that there is no such thing as charity in America.

But then why would he say "Some people might be coming up with that soon" ?

The BG quote was "I don't carry an ipod. I think carrying music on my mobile phone is much better. Some people might be doing that in the future." (chuckles)"

"Carrying music on my mobile" would be the "future" thing (never mind that there are already phones that do this, and even phones and PDAs running Windows Mobile that do this...)

As I stated in a few posts up I'm not that happy with the pricing of the iTunes Movies, but, if I were to buy any I would quickly run into a huge problem - STORAGE! I have an iBook with 60 GB drive and it's almost full from other stuff.

Apple should come out with a home storage network server with RAID, etc.

that's my hold back right now. i just don't have space for movies on my powerbook, and putting them on external media wouldn't make sense, at that point i could just toss a dvd or two in my backpack.

If they don't announce/release new MacBooks, my plans are severely screwed.

Aside from that, I have 200 to blow on some gadget or other. I wonder if Apple can give me a reason to give it to them rather than to Nintendo for a Wii.

"Media Device" = Does it include an iPod Video?

This would somewhat explain why the Paris Expo was given the cold shoulder.
"Bonjour, mes amis! The iTunes Movie Store is finally here! (but only in the U.S.)"

This way, they announce the store but also get a chance to demo the product at the Expo.

    -Squire

The Paris Expo is a redheaded stepchild, and hardly even acknowledged by Apple PR folks. ("We have two events per year, WWDC and MWSF." "And Paris Expo." "Paris what?")

Even if the iTMediaStore was to be US and France (which, I agree, is about 95% unlikely) they'd still not announce it at Paris. Apple has decided on two major events, and impromptu mini-events as announcements warrant. And Paris Expo is not on that list.

Personally, I see the timing of this event as a way of driving that point home in the press. Why would you go to Paris, when you might miss something really important coming out of Cupertino?

"One reliable MacRumors.com source has provided a more detailed description of one of the prototypes for the upcoming Apple Phone. The description has yielded this artist's rendition of the phone. (Click image for larger view). The phone offers a familiar look to iPod owners, with the preservation of the iPod click-wheel.

The click-wheel is closer to the bottom of the device with the screen taking a vertical orientation. The click-wheel portion of the device reportedly slides down to reveal a traditional numeric dial-pad underneath. The front is black, while the back is chrome like the current iPod."

Basically someone said "it will look like nano but with a bigger screen, and the scroll wheel slides down for the keyboard," then macrumors had some one do a mock up of it. (A poor one at that, shouldn't there be a discernable gap between the part that slides down, and the part that doesnt)

Is it just me or does the scroll wheel sliding down seem backwards? The revealed keypad would be recessed and in the middle of the phone, sounds awkward, and unattractive. Also would we not consistently hit buttons/scrolling on the scroll wheel while dialing a number?

Come on Apple, show us the HD. In a time when everyone's standoffish about HD because of the format wars Apple adopting the technology would mean you would never have bought into the wrong technology -- and eventually I imagine it would become the standard.

Come on Apple, push the technology forward like you know you should. Please?

Lets see how long they will stay away. There are buckets of DOLLARS waiting to be made in the App Store.

Yes, but only for Apple, because they own the infrastructure. We still haven't heard of a company that can really make a living with software for the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. So far, it's all just hype and even though there are hundreds of thousands of apps distributed through the AppStore, the only winner at this point in time is Apple.

And to be honest, from a customer's perspective, I do hope that that the AppStore concept will fail. The AppStore as it is manifest a distribution monopoly for Apple, and monopolies -always- hurt the customer and prevent innovation. Imagine you could only obtain Mac application through the AppStore with similar rules: There wouldn't be a Firefox for the Mac because it competes with Apple's Safari. There wouldn't be an Adobe Lightroom for the Mac because it competes with Apple's Aperture. There wouldn't be any DVD or CD ripping software for the Mac because those apps could hurt Apple's iTunes sales. There probably wouldn't even be a Microsoft Office anymore because it competes with Apple's (inferior) iWork Suite. And, worst of all, all software authors would be FORCED to distribute their apps through the AppStore which would impose an Apple distribution tax on their software. As a result, they would all run away and write their apps for Windows instead. And Apple probably wouldn't even care because most of their customers are Internet-surfing consumers anyway who don't need much more than Safari, Mail and iLife to play with their photos and iPods.
