    lol!

And so the cries of disappointment begin...
Thats the best part of these forums is watching the buildup until it reaches some ungodly device that is not probable or even possible and then sheer disappointment when Apple announces a decent upgrade to a great product.

Frame size is bigger but its also interlaced, so in truth its 720x240 every other frame, once its deinterlaced, the picture can get close to the original, but not as good as pure progressive scan.
Erm... that is wrong. All major Hollywood DVDs are encoded as progressive full frames at 23.976fps. The interlacing you are seeing is the result of adding pulldown frames to pad it out to 29.97 interlaced for NTSC. And since they are encoded anamorphically, it uses the full 720x480 and depending on your output display, either gets letterboxed or stretched wide on a real 16:9 HDTV.

Are iTS movies letterboxed? If so, then the quality of iTS movies is closer to 640x360.

It is expected to be a Conroe "drop-in" and should work with the same motherboards as Conroe.

    This won't be the case:

    http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=16078

just because it's LGA 775 doesn't mean it's a Conroe 'drop-in'. It'll need at least a 975x or p965 chipset and modified motherboard circuitry to handle it. And please, people, stop with the 'pin compatible' crap. Just because a proc is 'pin compatible' with another proc doesn't mean you can mix and match as you like. You have to think about the chipset, and about voltage regulators, and the motherboard circuitry in general. I have a board with a Pentium D in it right now - both the socket and the chipset support Conroe, but the board itself doesn't simply because of the voltage regulator. By the 'pin compatible' theory, I should be able to shove a Kentsfield into just about any late-model P4 board and have it work just fine -- won't happen!

The margins on a mid-mac should be better than the iMac since it's using standard (and therefore cheap) desktop components. So any mid-mac sales in preference to the iMac would probably make Apple more money anyway.

The competition is fierce in that market segment though. The iMac or Mini form factors don't have quite as much competition, so price comparisons always leave a lot out of the picture. With a mid-range tower, the comparisons would be much more direct. Apple seems to be shaking its "expensive toy" image, but I wonder if they could "pull a Mac Pro" in the mid-range as well.

Still lovin' my 2009 iMac.... best machine I've ever owned.

So do I ... got the 27" i5 in and am just LOVING it. Couldn't justify the i7 as few apps support hyperthreading, wonder if this is still true.

Use my beautiful machine mostly for photo editing. See no reason to update to any new iMac this time round. Found it's worth to upgrade computers every three years as the science progresses, and look already forward to upgrading end of 2012, when technology will really have changed enough since 2009 to make it all worth the new experience.

    Love you Apple!

Yeah, OK, "rumored" then.... but there are more "rumors" that it'll be Xeon (Woodcrest) rather than Core 2 Duo (Conroe).

In fact, I think "Chinese Wispers" might be more appropriate!

MacPro will have Woodcrest in dual configs, but i'd expect to see Conroe in the low end.

MacPro's: Now with Intel Core 2 and Xeon Processors.

Merom in the iMac. If there is not a big difference between the Merom and Conroe(which I doubt there will be) it would make sense to go with the chip with lower power consumption for better temps.

*jumps into Windows 7 in Parallels to check it out again*

    "Awesome???"

It's awesome by contrast to Vista. It's the best Windows version to date. I like to have a Windows box around for games and stuff.

Apple is the copyright holder of those images and they provide the right to use those images in Applications running on macs via the API on a Mac running OS X.

So why can't you use an official Apple API on the iPhone? That's crazy.

    Problems:

--Dependence on an internet connection. Deal breaker right there. Subways? Forget it.
    --Buffer times
    --Connection instability/loss
--Already way overstrained data networks contributing to the above
--Battery life will suffer if it's wifi
--And if it's 3G, well there's another bill in the mail every month. A recurring bill in the form of data charges to listen to my music I already paid for? No thank you. No, no, no thank you.

Since when did every device in the house need a monthly bill to go with it? AT&T provides a pretty crappy service as it is to begin with, why shuffle any more money right into their pockets?

Dependence on an internet connection and a bill in the mail are enormous deal breakers.

To the people saying "Oh, well Apple isn't taking your hard drive away", no, they aren't, but this is the first step. In 20 years hard drives will be obsolete, as everything will be cloud based, and you'll be forced into the cloud whether you want to be or not.

This service is a completely stupid idea for anyone who has an iPod with a big enough hard drive to store their stuff. I can see the appeal for those with more than 160 GB of music, but other than those people, I see literally zero benefits to be had by this, and a slew of problems/frustrations to be gained.

I wonder if I have room in my iPod collection for such a device :D .

If this is true, I would be happy to see this come to life, not because of the color, but because of the charity aspect.

I refuse to waste any more time arguing with someone that doesn't understand what he's talking about and thinks a niche format will rule the world in short order and that adaptors are 10 cents on the dollar for complex new high speed connectors. Good luck arguing with this guy. I'm done wasting my time.

Wow. Good news for Apple and the future of the iTS in getting more studios on board. :)

If Apple can just convince studios to release movies in 720p and 1080p formats, it would kill off the blu-ray / HD DVD rivalry once and for all.
GOOD! I think the HD DVD is out of control already. The future isn't in DVDs in my opinion, it's in digital formats. The iTV is just the first to prove it.

I am glad this movie thing is successful. I like the lower prices on new releases but I wish I could burn one copy to dvd so I can watch it anywhere.

Not to mention, operating a phone while driving is becoming illegal in most states due to distracted driving. I figure there would be a bunch of drunk people using this app while driving drunk? Geez.

I got an idea...what about an app that tells ME where the drunk drivers are so I can stay away from THEM?

Now there's an app I would pay for!

Why would you think that? The Intel IGP can drive the same resolution on the 15" just fine.

My Matrox G200 AGP 4x card can drive these resolutions flawlessly, and it has only 8 MB of RAM and hails from 10 years ago. People seriously don't understand graphics performance and where it matters if they really think driving a framebuffer resolution is something we need modern hardware for.

Every cell phone is tracked .... don't know how many store it on the local device (out of reach for anyone except you), but the tracking data from every cell phone is stored on the providers servers and/or government servers - law enforcement could access that information in almost real time.

Presumably with a warrant and not on the fly at the side of the road without a warrant. Although I remember reading about some sort of site the gov has set up with the carriers where they can get info without warrants (patriot act thing).

Apple could blow a hundred million in legal expenses. It's less of an instance of throwing in the towel, and more of an instance of, "You know, the way idiot judges/juries hand out settlements these days, let's just give them a paltry sum, let them think they've won, and still destroy them in the MP3 market."

You're right it's just like the ages old Mac verses PC debate can't really compare them.

It really comes down to want you need to do and how much you are prepared to spend.

It's not even the technology's price that's the difference, that's decided by another company. it's the technologies that are hard to compare.

Then why do you hate CDMA so much? There are ways of unlocking CDMA phones and using them on other networks.

And the reason why I talked about international roaming rates was because you said in a nutshell that we couldn't bring our phone to another country.

There are ways of walking on the moon. Doesnt mean its particularly consumer-friendly.

I brought up using a phone internationally because of the technical compatibility of using GSM over CDMA. price is irrelevant. the fact that "some cdma phones are gsm compatible" is proof that CDMA has very limited use worldwide.

so basically. IF your CDMA carrier has a phone that you like AND is GSM compatible, you can take it and roam.

or. you can accept that while it may be technically superior (i said MAY. speed isnt everything) CDMA is a very tiny pocket of the mobile market.

For those who are jailbroken with ssh installed, the file is located at /private/var/root/Library/Caches/locationd/consolidated.db on the phone. Regardless of jailbreak, it's in your iTunes backup (<home dir>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/<your device hash>) as the file 4096c9ec676f2847dc283405900e284a7c815836. I don't really see this happening, if apple is going to take the risk of entering this competitive market, I see them doing it with a very innovative 'new' product.
